What’s your Word?

Happy New Year, 2015!

What's going to make this year different?

Do you start each year thinking I want things to change, but somehow 12 months slip

by and things are the exactly same as when you started in January.

Hmmmmm, anyone else guilty of this…..?

How can you make this the year, that by December, you can have different results

for the better?

The answer is, having a "word" for the year.  Meaning, one word that every time you

do something at home or at work, you think about that word and how you can action it.

The word becomes like a conscience on your shoulder day in and day out.

If you are 100% deliriously happy, successful and fulfilled in every part of your life then

don't continue reading.

However I am sure that if you are like me, and most mere mortals, this is not the case.

So what do I mean by a "word"? Well, for me, this year my "word" is CHANGE,

so every time I go to do something in my normal routine, I think, how can I change

this to be better, more streamlined, out of my comfort zone, push me further,

get different and greater results.

For example, I have been known to have a little problem with making decisions….

I procrastinate…agonise…. worry…think some more….ask advice… put off and put off, etc etc.

Compounding the agony more and more. Making the decision way more painful than

it needs to be. Let's just say, I can agonise over whether to read the junk mail or not,

so you can see my dilema!

However, 2015 my new "word", CHANGE, I have restructured this process. Now,

every time I am faced with a decision, I am just going to decide then and there.

Be brutally decisive! Ok, the exception is, if it's a decision that carries substantial weight,

that requires more input and research, then I set myself a time limit of when I will be

making that decision and stick to this limit.

Imagine your "word" is like having an elastic band around your wrist, so that instead

of blindly going ahead with your same old routine you ping the elastic on your wrist.

The sting from the ping (lol), makes you remember your word and for a moment stop

to think about how you could do things differently.

Now your "word" might be, action, abundance, forgiveness, health, joy, love, gratitude,

whatever you think is the word that will see you through the year so you have better,

brighter and different results.

Keep a diary of the differences you notice week by week, so by Dec 2015 you can

say this year has been the best year ever, and guess what….YOU made it happen!

What's you word going to be?

“Fling” or “Real Thing”?

Are you treating your career like a "fling" or the "real thing"?

Are you just being casual, not putting in any effort, only going through the motions?

Are you only in it because you haven't got the energy or motivation to have something you really want?

It's probably not often you hear of careers being compared to relationships! When you think about it, the two are similar and run parallels.

"Whaaaat…..?", you say.

Let me explain.

"Fling" careers offer instant gratification. Things like money, ego boost, people pleasing, or it was something to pass the time till something else came along. "Fling" careers can be fun, you meet new people, maybe learn new skills but in the back of your mind, it's a stopgap. The job serves a purpose,  but the days skim by, only to leave you with the thought that there could be more.

Eventually, the instant gratification starts to loose its fizzle! It becomes mundane, an effort and lack luster. The "fling" has run it's course and once again you are on the look out for a new instant gratification. The cycle continues.  Nothing wrong with this, although quite often we can be left feeling empty, shallow and unfulfilled.

This is when possibly, we might start to feel a bit down, lose the spring in our step, speak and act negatively about ourselves and others. It can affect relationships at home and with friends, because deep down you know you are not honoring yourself and your full potential. Time is slipping by.

Deep down you really want a "real thing" career, but fear, self doubt or other people's influences are holding you in that "fling" cycle.

A "real thing" career has purpose. It's the career where you feel alive, happy, committed and in it for the long haul, for better or worse. It is aligned with who you are as a person, shares your values, it brings you joy and gives you the opportunity to grow personally and professionally.

Having this "real thing" career may be challenging, you may be tested mentally and physically, it may require courage, conviction and perseverance to get  "the one".

Why do it?

Unbelievable gain that you never would have thought possible.  Yes this may be in the form of money, but you realize that this is the bonus of stepping up, overcoming fear and going for a "real thing" career. The real gain is how you feel about yourself, the legacy you are leaving and the example you are setting.

Just like "fling" careers, "real thing" careers can also be fun, you might meet new people, maybe learn new skills but in the back of your mind, it's NOT a stopgap. It's the path that you knew you were supposed to be on, but had been too afraid or felt it was too hard to take.

Once you have actually made up your mind to go for it, to have that "real thing" career, you are unstoppable. A switch comes on inside that lights your fire, filling your entire being, you feel the passion to your core. No "fling" career could do this!

Personally I have had both types of careers. Sometimes even running at the same time, having a "fling" career, so I can achieve my goal of a "real thing" career. They both have worth. What type of career are you in now, "fling" or "real thing"?

My thought to you is, if you were told tomorrow that you did not have long to live, would you have regrets that you had not gone for the "real thing" career. Is there something deep down you want to achieve? Is there something you know you would love to do? Or maybe you don't know yet what it is, but want to find out.

You deserve to have the best life possible, it's up to you to give it a go, don't wait, as your time is finite.

Being Recognised?

As humans we have esteem needs, or the strive to gain approval and recognition.

Sadly none of us are perfect but that doesn't stop us from trying to be, and wanting everyone to notice along the way. With the clothes we wear, the friends we have, the car we drive, the goals we set ourselves and even how much money we have.

It all comes down to the fact that we want to be recognised. Well, I have to admit I am guilty at times of this. How about you?

Just imagine how good the feeling would be if you are being recognised not just by the people close to you, but even others you don’t personally know. You might feel unique, proud, happy, special and maybe even loved. Who doesn’t want this kind of attention, that can bring all these feelings?

star

The thing is, what you are being recognised for? Is it for the material things the clothes, car, how much money you have?

Or are there other areas to be recognised that may bring even more of those feelings? Like;

1) Being confident.

2) Standing up for yourself.

3) Reaching out to others.

4) Learning to love and be loved back.

5) Respecting others as much as you respect yourself.

6) Loving your work.

7) Doing your best in every task you engage in.

8) Being thankful for everything.

I think it would be fair to say that most of us want to look and feel good, but people notice and recognise those that are being real, humane and grounded also.

You can be someone who can reach the sky with your feet on the ground.

What are you being recognised for?

Would love to hear your thoughts and comments below.

Let it Go

Have you ever thought, what does it mean when you have a song stuck in your head on constant replay? You know, when you hear the song on the radio or television and you can't stop singing it in your head.

Maybe it doesn’t mean anything.. but what if it did?

Is it just a distraction to temporarily give your mind a break from all the "to do" lists, chores and errands you have to do? Or, a chance to test your memory as to how many of the lyrics you can actually remember…or… maybe…just maybe.. the song may be trying to give you a message?

Why it is that song, at that time? What does it mean? Ok I know that sounds crazy, but hear me out.

What Was I Thinking?

Have you ever asked yourself, “what was I thinking?”!!

That moment when you can’t turn back but you are struggling to move forward.

Just over 12 months ago I remembered ( in a rather quirky way which I’ll share in a minute) that a dream of mine was to write a book to share my life experience and story to hopefully help others.

Darn you dream! I had never written anything before, it a was total opposite to my career and I was someone who is not good at sitting still, so writing was not my first choice….ever! Definitely was not a journaler, blogger or FB poster!
